The Science Initiative Group (SIG) was established at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1999 to promote scientific research in underrepresented countries. This was accomplished through two major initiatives developed and run in partnership with organizations in the Global South: the Millennium Science Initiative (MSI) (1999–2012) and the Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE) (2008–2017). SIG closed down in 2019, having fruitfully worked with partners to generate MSI and RISE successor initiatives that have remained active under local ownership.
