Her doctoral research topic was an assessment of household water treatment technologies used in rural Kenya, looking at the efficacy of the household water treatment technologies 1-2 years after the promotors' follow-up with the communities had ceased. Her aim was to determine if the methods were as effective after external support had been withdrawn as they were during the controlled field and laboratory testing period (near ideal conditions). The results showed that all four methods assessed performed at a low level when compared with laboratory and controlled field test results.
