RISE-AMSEN Adds Node at University of Ghana

The new University of Ghana node of AMSEN is based at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Engineering Sciences within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at University of Ghana is a foundational part of the School of Engineering Sciences, which granted admission to its first batch of students for the 2004-05 academic year.

The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in materials science and engineering (MSE) with particular focus on ceramics, metallurgy and polymers. The postgraduate programmes, which started in the 2014/2015 academic year (August 2014) focus on equipping students with a solid background knowledge in advanced MSE, training them to conduct independent scientific investigations and develop materials for the energy, environment and health care sectors, and giving them the advanced interdisciplinary skills required to design, optimize and evaluate the technical and economic viability of materials resources.

The Department has the theoretical and experimental resources available to address these scientific and engineering problems successfully. Its faculty members' main research areas are energy materials research, ceramics, and composite materials research.

The node has access to shared facilities within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, such as an X-ray diffractometer, Scanning Electron Microscope, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer, mass spectrometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, muffle furnace (1200°C), metallurgical microscopes, spin coater, centrifuge, spray coater, etc.

The AMSEN node at the University of Ghana aims to become a centre of excellence in energy materials research. The University of Ghana joined the AMSEN project in September 2014 with its three pioneer Master of Philosophy (MPhil) students; Miss Afia Rania Nuamah, Mr. Reuben Seth Richter and Fredrick Paakwah Buabeng (pictured above, L to R). All of the students are currently enrolled at the University of Ghana and are being supervised by Dr. Boateng Onwona-Agyeman and Dr. David Dodoo-Arhin and co-supervised by AMSEN nodes at the University of Nairobi and the University of Botswana. The node is coordinated by Dr. David Dodoo-Arhin, the Ag. Head of Department.
