January 2011

The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) has published a concept note authored by its Working Group on Higher Education, titled "Creating an African Higher Education and Research Space." In the document, RISE is cited as an example of regional centers of excellence built from existing institutions: "A different concept in creating Regional Centres of Excellence is to network existing institutions.

December 2010

The Carnegie Board approved 22 grants at their December meeting, including a $5 million renewal grant to the Science Initiative Group for the Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE). This money will be used over the course of 3 years to support the development of science professionals in sub-Saharan Africa. To see a full listing of grants approved in December, click here.

November 2010

SIG board member Jacob Palis received the Balzan Prize for Mathematics from the President of the Republic of Italy on November 19, 2010 in Rome. The award was given in recognition of "his fundamental contributions to the Mathematical Theory of Dynamical Systems." The International Balzan Prize Foundation’s aim is to promote culture, the sciences and the most meritorious initiatives in the cause of humanity, peace and brotherhood among peoples throughout the world.

November 2010

Leaders from the 5 RISE networks and the Chair of the SIG board joined other Carnegie grantees and Corporation staff for a meeting of networks in Nairobi, Kenya from November 15-17, 2010. Lesley Cornish and Frank Kavishe represented AMSEN, John David Kabasa and Stephen Kiama represented RISE-AFNNET, John Saka and Jane Morris represented SABINA, Denis Hughes represented SSAWRN, and Maggie Kyewalyanga represented WIO-RISE.
